Why We Love Logic

Why we love logic

Why we love logic

Logic is the science of valid, right and proper reasoning. Logic allows you to draw the correct conclusion from a given set of facts.

Drawing the correct conclusion from a given set of facts, may well mean the difference between winning and losing.

Your continued success on Planet Earth is not automatically guaranteed. In order to survive you must act. But in order to act, you must first know what to do and how to do it. And knowledge of what to do, and how to do it, does not come automatically.

It has to be gained by a process of logic.

Logic is the art of valid reasoning

Logic is the intellectual component in your mind that allows you to take the data provided by your senses and make logical sense of it.

Other animals have the five senses. Like us: they can see, hear, smell, taste and feel the world around them. But other animals are not able to draw any logical conclusions from the data they get from their senses. That is why you don't see deers driving fast cars, or see rodents reading books or mice doing maths.

In other words, animals cannot do anything technological or scientific with the sense data that they get from their eyes and ears. Why don't they do anything technological or scientific? They cannot; because they lack logic.

Logic is the ability to integrate the data provided by the senses and to make sense of it in the form of concepts.

You are primarily a conceptual animal

You are primarily a conceptual animal; not a perceptual one.

  • Your eyes are not the best. An eagle has better eyes than you.
  • Your hearing is not the best. A dog can hear more acutely than you.

So you are not the master in terms of percept'; animals are often more perceptive and aware of the surroundings than you. But you build concepts from percepts.

You build concepts, from percepts - you are the conceptual animal. And you go on to use those concepts and to combine them, using logic, to form principles. Then you go on to combine principles to form theories, hypothesise and then laws that describe and prescribe the universe you live in and how to act successfully within it.

Your ability to reason logically and therefore, to induce general principles; and to deduce their practical applications, has transformed the hunter-gather into a hi-tech astronaut.

It is logic that gives us our mathematics, our grammar, our science, our technology, our philosophy, law, medicine, physics, chemistry, biology, architecture, psychology, radio astronomy, electricity, musical notation, telecommunications and computer coding.

If you lost your logic, then all the above would disappear with it.

Logic is the method by which humans survive and thrive on the planet.

If you lose, or fail to use, your logic, you'll arrive at illogical conclusions.

If you then act on illogical conclusions, you will almost certainly fail to achieve your goals. And if you fail to achieve your goals, that will wreck your chances for the future.

On the other hand, if you keep your eyes and ears open, if you think logically, then you will arrive at rational, logical conclusions. If you act on logical conclusions, then you will almost certainly achieve your goals. And if you continue to achieve your goals, you will ensure a brighter future for yourself, your family and your friends.

That's why we love logic.
